Welcome to Fermata: A MusicMED Publication

Long has the field of music therapy needed a place to share ideas, experiences, and perspectives beyond the walls of research journals — a professional, but responsive platform where professionals can quickly exchange ideas for better practice and advancing the field of music therapy.
Today, we’re proud to introduce Fermata, a new professional publication for music therapists.

What Makes Us Different

While the field of music therapy has some wonderful publications for studying emerging practices, these journals are only shared a few times per year, and tend to be hyper-focused in scope. That’s the nature of research, and we’re grateful to have these resources available to us.
Fermata is different. We aim to bring down barriers for publishing, so anyone with a good idea can share it and share it quickly. We complement academic journals by breaking away from the theoretical and narrow applications of research, and focus on sharing real world insights that work. Whereas traditional publications tend to deliver insights from people in labs and classrooms, Fermata brings you perspectives from practicing professionals. And we don’t stop at clinical care — we offer expertise all the way from the C Suite.

Whether you’re a new clinician looking to build your toolkit, a business owner learning how to lead, or a seasoned therapist looking to develop your program, Fermata is here to deliver the ideas you need to get to the next level. Because we believe developing the field starts by empowering the people at the frontline.

Why Fermata?

In music, a fermata cues a pause - a moment where a note is held, sustained, and given space to resonate. In the same way, this publication invites us to pause within the fast pace of clinical work, business demands, and professional challenges, so that our voices, ideas, and reflections can resonate with colleagues across settings.

Fermata
is powered by MusicMED, a community dedicated to developing high-quality music therapy resources that educate professionals and expand the application of music in healthcare. By housing Fermata within MusicMED, we ensure that it remains a professional resource while also connecting it to MusicMED’s broader objectives of mission, education, and development.

Our Team

Fermata is led by professionals with hands-on experience across a range of industries — not just music therapy. Our Editorial Board includes individuals whose backgrounds span healthcare and business administration, executive coaching, organizational learning and development, private practice, academia, and marketing.

When you read an article in Fermata, you’re not just looking through the lens of a music therapist — you’re engaging with insights from people who have led companies, built programs, and integrated music therapy into large-scale organizations. These are perspectives you won’t find anywhere else.

What’s Next

As Fermata grows, we will publish articles throughout the year in real time with the changing landscape of healthcare, responding to the issues that impact music therapists every day. Our goal is to provide real insights on real issues, keeping pace with the needs of the field and the clinicians doing work that matters. We also welcome readers to write in with topic requests or article suggestions, so this publication reflects the questions and conversations that matter most to you.

Welcome to Fermata.
